A Whisper in the Walls Book Review

Book #12: A Whisper in the Walls by: Scott Reintgen

Overall rating: 9/10

A Whisper in the Walls is a lot different than A Door in the Dark. Whereas A Door in the Dark is more dark academia, A Whisper in the Walls focuses more on revenge for Ren Monroe. This book really explores more of the Waxways, and it has way more action than the first book in the series. New characters are introduced, more revenge plots are revealed, and Ren Monroe keeps on being an amazing protagonist.

In the story, Ren finds allies to her goal of revenge against the Broods: House Tin’Vori. Like Ren, the two remaining members—siblings Dahvid and Nevelyn— have a vendetta against the Broods. However, they each have their own agendas and motives. Additionally, Ren has to deal with the consequences of bonding with Theo Brood. Theo’s father, Landwin Brood, exiles him in an attempt to drive the two apart. As Ren gets closer to achieving revenge, she must deal with her feelings for Theo, and watch her back for any potential betrayals. A Whisper in the Walls covers a lot in one book.

Unlike the last book, the main characters do not go to school. While it changes up the whole vibe of this book, it honestly improves the book by a lot. In this book, the main characters are mainly focusing on revenge. There’s way more action in the book than before (thanks to the new characters), and by the end, it’s clear that the last book is going to be very impactful. However, many aspects from the previous book are carried over to this one.

The book maintains its amazing world building throughout this book. I’m introduced to more magic than ever before, and I’m also constantly learning new things about the world. The discovery of House Tin’Vori was a huge surprise, and it only added to the depth of the world in the book.

The new characters, Nevelyn and Dahvid, are also surprising new additions to the book’s cast. In A Door in the Dark, House Tin’Vori is barely mentioned, so when Dahvid and Nevelyn are introduced, it is quite unexpected. However, their addition in the book adds so much more depth to the story. Their backstories are intriguing, and their screen time adds a substantial amount of action to the story.

A Whisper in the Walls is an amazing second book that builds upon an already awesome first book in a series. It’s quite a different vibe, but the new characters and setting improved this book from the first. After reading the ending, it’s clear that the third book is going to be much bigger than I could ever imagine.
