Killer Instinct Book Review

Book #10: Killer Instinct by: Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Overall rating: 7/10

Killer Instinct was just as great as The Naturals. More character backstories are revealed in this book, and I got to experience even more murder mysteries! I would have liked it if there was more of a connection between The Naturals and Killer Instinct. However, it still maintains the YA mystery vibe I love.

One thing that I’ve loved about the whole series so far is how immersive the murder mysteries have been. By reading the book, I’m also learning a lot of interesting stuff. Sloane’s statistics are always nice conversation starters, and I enjoyed reading the ‘how’ behind how to solve a murder mystery. While it doesn’t mean that the reader will become an FBI agent after reading the series, it still teaches the reader interesting information.

In Killer Instinct, the Naturals must solve another murder mystery, but this time, the killer is a copycat of Dean’s father. The Naturals have to find out who the murderer is before it’s too late, but it turns out to be way more complicated than simply finding the murderer.

Killer Instinct focuses more on Dean’s story before he went to the Naturals program in the book. It’s really interesting to learn more about him. This makes me think that every book in the series is about a different character, which I have mixed feelings about. It’s nice to learn the story about every character, but the stories aren’t really connected (so far), and the series doesn’t build up into a bigger conflict.

There were also several new characters in this book. They were introduced pretty well, and the screen time between the new characters and the original characters was divided nicely. Like I said before, this story is focused on Dean’s story, and Killer Instinct reflected that with the new characters.

Also, the love triangle is finally resolved! Before I read this book, I was convinced that it would take the whole book series for Cassie to choose someone, but I guess I was wrong. I totally approve of who Cassie chose, but that might not be the case for everyone.

The Naturals continues on with Killer Instinct! I can’t wait to review the next book in The Naturals!
